BW: How long have you been on the streets?
Brittany: I’ve been on the streets for about a year now. I’m down on my luck. I had my kids taken away from me. People think that you can do it all by yourself but you can’t.
I’ve had a hard life. I’ve been beaten, had a gun pointed to my head, I been tied up and I’ve been raped. My dad went to prison when I was 13 and my mom left us at the same time.
BW: Damn, I’m sorry. Can you tell me a story about something that really impacted your life?
Brittany: Me and my family moved to Panama City Beach Florida. My mom and dad got a job at a place called Laguna Grill. We moved in with people they barely knew and they would watch me when my parents weren’t home. The family had two other kids. The step-daddy would come in my room at night and would touch on me and feel on me. I was 10 years old when he raped me. He told me that if I told my parents, he’d kill them and me. He continued to rape me for two years. By the time I was 12 years old I got the courage to tell my folks. My family didn’t believe me, so they didn’t do anything about it. It continued for another year and didn’t stop till we moved from Panama City to Daytona.
BW: So the guy never got charged with anything?
Brittany: No, he’s still running around. I forgave the man but… some days I’m like, why me. I was just a little kid. What did I do? I couldn’t of done nothing that bad to be treated like that.
