Charlie’s an artist that works with metal. He has lived on the same land, in Northeast Georgia, since he was born, 71 years ago.
BW: How have things changed around here in the last 71 years?
Charlie: Oh… it’s changed but you know, Georgia is one of the top 10 most prejudice states. There’s a lot of prejudice here. It’s changed some because it’s had to change.
I got a little court case that I went to. I got a speeding ticket. A white guy went speeding past me but I was the one who got the ticket.
I went to court for it a few weeks ago and they asked if I wanted to pay the fine and I said, “no, I want a jury trial. I want to tell my story.” I know I got that ticket because of prejudice.
