I met Otis in downtown Atlanta living on an abandoned bridge.
BW: How long have you been on the streets?
Otis: Oh man…. wooo, it’s been a while. Yeah… it’s been a while.
BW: Have you ever tried the shelters?
Otis: Yeah I have tried them but you know, they’re closing a lot of them down. I tried them. I really don’t like sleeping with a whole bunch of people.
BW: I’ve been to Peachtree and Pine. Man, that place is a mess.
Otis: I had to stay there one night. That’s when the police would come and lock us up, just for being under the bridge. Just sleeping down there, they would lock you up. So, I stayed at Peachtree and Pine one night. Never been back.
BW: What are your plans for the future?
Otis: I’d like to get into a small business. Get me a couple of mowers and grass cutting equipment. I’m working with this guy now and I’ve learned as much as I can. There’s a little money in it.
I have a girlfriend, you know what I’m saying. She was on drugs too. Her family came and got her and took her back to California. She’s doing good now. I’ve been thinking about getting cleaned up and getting back with her.
