Taylor: At the time I was young and stupid, traveling with my girlfriend who was a little older than me but just as naive as I was.
So, we were hitchhiking through Arizona, right through the four corners. We wanted to go through Navajo land to see what it was like. We were already there anyway and that seemed to be where the ride was leading us. We were going down and we got to a bridge or maybe it was just a little gap in the earth. Right down there, you could see the town. It was just shacks. It looked like a third world country, not like any part of America I’d ever seen. It was literally just like plywood and two by fours nailed together, no paint. Just little tiny shacks all over.
There was this Native American guy talking to another Native American guy who was in a pickup truck, backed up to a long string of handmade staffs and flutes and other random things. The truck was leaving as we approached the guy. I saw the staffs and I don’t know why I did it but I reached out for this one. Right before I grabbed it he said, “it’s yours.” I told him I didn’t have anything to trade, no money, nothing to offer. He said, “take it, it’s yours.” I still resisted. He looked me in the eyes and said, “Take it. You might need it to fend off the wolves.” in this super deep voice so I took it.
We went down into this little town. We were walking through and everyone was on one. Like sitting down in allies, sitting around babbling. People kept coming up to us, asking us for change. We knew the drill because we do the same shit. But they were kind of following us around. It had a real zombie feel to it. You know. Out of their minds. So, we were uncomfortable. We said, “let’s get out of here.”
We were walking down this dirt road and we’d been walking for a couple of hours, picking up really beautiful stones off the side of the road that I’d never seen before. A small pickup truck pulls up to us with three Native American boys about twenty-five or twenty-six. They didn’t say anything. They just stopped right next to us. We jumped right in the back.
They started driving down the road and they never looked back at us. Never said hey or anything. We were like, whatever, we’re getting a ride. We needed it. We were dying out there.
So, eventually they turn down this dirt road that goes up a mountain and they start speeding up. I start knocking on the window and saying. “let us out,” but they weren’t looking. I caught the guy’s eyes in the rear mirror and I was like, “oh shit.” I saw his eyes and they were fucked up. They looked soulless and black. It was almost like they knew that I noticed. The two in the passenger seat turned around and started mocking me. I was like, “these mother fuckers are crazy.” Their eyes were black too. They were laughing and cackling.
My girlfriend starts freaking out, “What are we gonna do? What are we gonna do?” And, I didn’t know. They just kept driving and driving. I noticed his window was cracked just a little. Just enough for the staff that the guy had given me to fit through. When I saw the crack, I heard the dudes voice say to me, “you might need it to fend off the wolves.” I looked at it laying in the bed of the truck and I said, “alright, I guess I’m gonna do this.”
I stood up and I propped it right up to the hole. I was aiming for his eye and I was about to jam it in his eye when he noticed in the rear view mirror what I was doing. He slammed on the brakes and I fell forward. She threw the gear out of the truck and we started running, The guy leaned his head out of the car and screamed, “come on, let’s go smoke some weed.” I yelled back, “fuck you!”. Then he yelled again, “we’re gonna to get a gun!”
We were still running when all this was going down. They came back like five minutes later so we hid in the grass. They looked for us for a good hour. Every time they’d go around we’d sneak a little farther off. Finally we got back to the road. As soon as we got to the road, this dude was flying in a nice SUV. I jumped out in front, waving my hands. He stopped. We got in. He didn’t say nothing. He just drove us to the next town.
