Veronica: The person who changed my life most was my mom. She died of cancer. When she died I didn’t believe it. My dad woke me up on the 28th of April and said, “we got to take your mom to the hospital cause she’s dead.” I thought I was having a bad dream so I went back to sleep. Something told me to wake up about 10 minutes later. I walk out and she’s slumped over on her futon with a burnt out cigarette in her hand. Next thing I know, I’m riding home with her ashes.
I’ve been on the streets since I was 16, about 6 months after her death.
My mom was my best friend. She was the only one who ever loved me, unconditionally. I know in my heart that if my mom were here, I would not be on the streets right now. I wish I could have told her that I loved her one more time.
